Preview on exciting 23rd annual EAU congress to be held in Milan, Italy

Arnhem, February 2008 – As one of the three congress presidents of the 23rd Annual Congress of the European Association of Urology – my colleagues are Professor Vincenzo Mirone and Professor Patrizio Rigatti - I am happy to inform you about the upcoming congress to be held from 26-29 March 2008 in Milan, Italy. At the congress, the second largest in the world, about 9,500 urologists from ± 100 different countries are expected to attend.

Scientific content
In recent years, the EAU has grown and developed into what is now: a leading and dynamic force in urology. It is the same dynamism and expertise that are the hallmarks of a high calibre and carefully arranged scientific programme. A thorough discussion and critical evaluation of the latest advancements in urology, for instance the use of biomarkers and medical treatment of bladder and renal cell cancer, are key features of the scientific programme. There is attention for every aspect of the urological spectrum: from basic research to the evaluation of the newest treatments. The sessions, which will include educational courses, state-of-the-art lectures, panel and round table discussions and symposia, will also provide an opportunity for all urologists to exchange views on current issues.

Twelve EAU section offices, such as the European Society for Uro-Technology (ESUT) and the European Society for Oncological Urology (ESOU), will organise their annual meeting in Milan so that all members remain up-to-date.
No less than 35 post-graduate training courses will be organised by the European School of Urology in association with the congress; they have proved enormously successful.

Never before has there been so much international collaboration in the medical field; we all share the desire to continually strive to improve healthcare and deliver the best patient care possible all over the world. This is evidenced by joint meetings between the EAU and, for instance, the Chinese Urological Association, the Arab Association of Urology and the Urological Society of India.

The official EAU press conference on Wednesday 26 March will once more summarise the urological highlights of these days, including the presentation of the latest results from the Global Prevalence Study on Infections in Urology (GPIU study). This worldwide study is internet based and investigates the prevalence of nosocomial infections, since these pose a serious threat to urological patients.

An extensive exhibition will be jointly held with the Congress. It will be open to all technical equipment manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and scientific publishers. This is a unique opportunity for any company to enhance its corporate visibility among the global urological community, as well as to promote its products and activities among the congress delegates.

European Association of Urology Nurses
The European Association of Urology Nurses meeting will be held in conjunction with the 23rd Annual EAU Congress in support of its goal to continually upgrade the nursing skills of its members. Last year in Berlin, the EAUN annual meeting attracted over 240 participants providing strong proof of the growing interest among professional nurses in Europe not only to hone their skills but also share their knowledge with colleagues from more than 25 countries. And to improve standards of urological nursing care, state-of-the-art lectures, symposia on various topics, discussions on clinical practices and optional visits to a Milan Hospital, among other activities, have been lined up.

Congress venue
The congress venue will be the Milano Convention Centre (MIC), built in 2002 and known as the largest of its kind in Italy. Milan's historic district, the famed cathedral, La Scala Theatre, Sforza's Castle and the world's top fashion addresses are all easily accessible from the MIC complex. Congress participants will not only have the convenience but will have all the chance to experience Milan's vibrant city life.

We hope that the 23rd Annual EAU Congress will be a red-letter date in your diary, an event that we expect to be exciting and informative. We look forward to being your hosts, knowing the Milan congress will be an enlightening and enjoyable experience that should not be missed.

Kind regards,

Professor Walter Artibani
