Abrahamsson EAU’s new Secretary General
Arnhem, 27 March 2007 -- The European Association of Urology (EAU) elected Per-Anders Abrahamsson as their new secretary general replacing Pierre Teillac who left Europe’s largest urological association to pursue another career. He was given a majority of votes during the general assembly held on the final day of the EAU’s four-day annual congress in Berlin from 21-24 March.
Professor Abrahamsson is the EAU’s fifth Secretary General and the first Swede to lead the EAU which represents around 10,000 urologists since the association was officially set up in 1973. Aside from Abrahamsson the EAU also elected Professor Walter Artibani from Milan, Italy as Adjunct Secretary General, the post vacated by Abrahamsson.
Professor Abrahamsson led a standing ovation to thank Professor Pierre Teillac for his leadership in the last three years. Teillac, who served after the term of EAU’s co-founder and longest-serving former Secretary General Prof. Frans Debruyne, says he is confident Abrahamsson would not only continue with the EAU’s goals but will also build on more successes in the coming years.
Abrahamsson says the EAU is building on its previous collaborative work between the national societies of Europe, which has been enormously successful and also establishing firm links with a number of international urology associations.
Abrahamsson added that it is important for the EAU to come up with effective long-term strategies that will further boost the influence of European urology.
An essential part of the EAU´s future success, according to Prof. Abrahamsson, is the fact that the professional people in the EAU Central Office and the EAU’s Executive committee and board members have a long history and a very close relationship.
