Master Class Barcelona 2007

2nd MASTER CLASS ON MEDICAL ONCOLOGY FOR UROLOGISTS HELD IN BARCELONA

Arnhem, June 2007 – The 2nd master class on medial oncology for urologists, involved in cancer care of urological patients is organised from 29 June to 1 July in Hotel Fira Palace in Barcelona, Spain. There are 4 teaching modules with presentations by European experts in different fields: hormonal and intravesical treatment; chemoprevention, immunotherapy, supportive therapy and new horizons; targeted therapies (anti-angiogenesis and bone therapy); systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy. Several exciting developments which will be discussed occurred in the fields of kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma), prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Course directors are Prof. H. Van Poppel (Leuven, Belgium) and Prof. Z. Kirkali (Izmir, Turkey).

With rapid advances in cancer research, the oncologically oriented urologist requires insight into the clinical applicability and impact of the latest range of surgical and medical treatment strategies. Many treatments have become available in recent years and even more in recent months which are now being studied in phase II-III trails in advanced disease and also in adjuvant settings after primary treatment with curative intention.

This master class fulfils the expectations from practising urologists who want to become or remain the organ-based specialist in the frontline and provide proof that a compact educational programme specially focused on urological tumours is not only a sensible move but has also been long overdue.

New therapeutic agents used in kidney cancer, prostate cancer, bladder and testis cancer, such as targeted treatments, vaccines and chemotherapy for e.g. prostate cancer will be discussed.
Most strikingly, progress is achieved in the field of renal cell carcinoma, the most deadly urological cancer. While in the past treatments with cytokines were minimally effective, some new forms of oral therapy bring about a long-term stable disease status in metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
Another point of interest is testis cancer. This is nowadays a disease with high treatment success rates. Thanks to recent developments, patients can survive cancer with minimal side effects. Thus their quality of life is definitely improved.

This teaching programme has been developed by close collaboration between the European Association of Urology (EAU), the European School of Urology (ESU) and the European Board of Urology (EBU).

At the end of the master class, an examination – coordinated by the European Board of Urology (EBU) – can be taken which should result in an EBU accredited certification.
