First North Eastern European Meeting organised by EAU in Finland

Arnhem, September 2007  - The Annual Congress of the European Association of Urology (EAU) is rapidly reaching a size which imposes limitations on the number of presentations and possibilities of direct professional contacts. The EAU Board therefore sees the need for an additional tier of meetings on a regional, but supranational basis. They are to be platforms were new clinical or experimental work from the region is presented to an international audience. Because of shorter travelling distance this has the added advantage of low budget participation, so that young urologists find it easier to participate actively. This will also give them the possibility to get to know their contemporaries from the region and to establish regional platforms of cooperation. To complement the international perspective, state-of-the-art lectures on topics of high current interest will be given by invited speakers from outside the region. The EAU 1st North Eastern European Meeting (NEEM) 2007 is a key meeting in this new concept.

The EAU 1st North Eastern European Meeting will take place in Tampere, Finland on 14-15 September 2007. The topics of the state-of-the-art lectures given by the invited speakers are prostate cancer, renal cell cancer and bladder disorders. On Friday 14 September the subjects of the Prostate Cancer programme are: PSA Screening: Where are the limits?; Active surveillance of localised prostate cancer; Less invasive therapy of organ confined disease; Advanced, organ confined disease: what are the options?

On Saturday 15 September an Update on renal cell cancer will be presented by experts in the field with topics such as: Are small renal tumours harmless?; Energy ablative treatment; Limits of partial nephrectomy and New developments in treating advanced renal cell cancer.

Chairman of the meeting is Professor Teuvo Tammela, President of the Finnish Urological Association.

The regional meetings are accredited within the EU-ACME programme by the European Board of Urology in compliance with the EBU/UEMS regulations.
