Clinical Research Fellowship (CRF)

First-rate clinical research work is the backbone of many research milestones. The EUSP contributes to this goal by offering the one-year Clinical Fellowship at an excellent European research institution.

How to apply
Candidates should apply online and provide the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • List of PubMed Publications of the past five years, at least 1 PubMed Publication is obligated
  • Copy of passport
  • Letter of motivation (including a clearly stated idea of how the work will be further pursued or explored in the scholar’s home country)
  • At least two letters of recommendation by senior urologists from the applicant’s country (should be signed and printed on original letterhead paper)
  • Proof of acceptance of the fellowship in the host institution (signed invitation letter from the host on original letterhead paper)
  • A detailed description of the action plan, including a time table, approved and signed by the host on original letterhead paper from the host institution.

The original and signed documents should be sent by post to the EUSP office. Please allow time for obtaining signatures from all relevant parties when preparing your appendices.

Conditions for application

  • Applicants for the EUSP must be urologists or urologists-in-training (third or fourth year resident)
  • Age limit of 40 years
  • EAU membership for at least six months is mandatory
  • The host institution should preferably be an EBU-certified training centre
  • All projects must be conducted in a European institution outside the country where the applicant is currently working
  • After having completed any EUSP scholarship it is not possible to reapply for any of the EUSP Programmes.
  • Application must be in English

Financial support
The one year Clinical Research Fellowship will be funded by both the EUSP and the hosting institution. A maximum of € 4000,- is made available by the EUSP and additional expenses will be covered by the hosting institution, provided they are justified by a well documented budget. It should be noted that during the Clinical Research Fellowship period, the applicant will be considered part of the hosting institution’s department staff. The budget should include:

  • The estimated costs of living (accommodation, visa, insurance, etc.)
  • Travel expenses for one roundtrip
  • Limited refunds for miscellaneous expenses in the home country (such as continuation of insurances and other costs incurred for which documentation can be presented).

The EUSP will not cover:

  • Expenses for accompanying persons
  • Course fees
  • Expenses for research and study materials
  • Private expenses

Deadlines
The application deadline is 31 March and 30 September of each year.
Please note that it’s not possible to start your scholarship within 4 months after each deadline.

Review of applications
After the application deadline the EUSP Board will evaluate all applications that have been submitted and select the most suitable candidates for a personal interview to be scheduled during the Annual EAU Congress.

Applicants will be informed approximately one month before the Annual EAU Congress whether or not they have been selected for an interview. The outcome of the interviews will be communicated to the applicants within a month after the Annual EAU Congress. The decision of the Board is final and no further appeal will be accepted.

Instalments
Financial grants will be transferred to the scholar in three instalments. A first instalment of 25% will be transferred before the start of the Clinical Research Fellowship. Written confirmation of the start date by the host supervisor is mandatory.

The second instalment of 50% will be transferred after four months. A third instalment of 25% will be transferred in the eight month of the project. The total amount of the grant will cover the actual costs as presented by the scholar to the EUSP Office after the Clinical Research Fellowship.

Reports
The scholar is required to present reports which should include:

  • The clinical or scientific achievement
  • Impressions of the host institution
  • Evaluation of the provisions that have been made by the host institution for the successful conduct of the (research) project

A first report should be submitted six weeks after the start of the Clinical Research Fellowship. This report will be evaluated by the EUSP advisor in consultation with the supervisor of the host institution. In case of a negative evaluation, the scholar may be asked to discontinue the Clinical Research Fellowship.

A second, intermediate report should be sent to the EUSP Office after six months. A detailed overview of expenses should be included.

At the end of the Clinical Research Fellowship the scholar is obliged to submit a 10-page (minimum) written summary report of his/her work, plus the prints of resulting publication(s). The applicant is also required to submit at least one abstract at the end of the scholarship which should be accepted for presentation at an international meeting in urology and published in the abstract book relating to the meeting. A detailed overview of expenses should be included together with a proof of payment of travel, accommodation, insurance and continuing expenses in the home country. Furthermore, the scholar is expected to present his/her work during the EUSP Session at the Annual EAU Congress.

Intellectual property and financial benefits
The regulations of the host institution where the research project is conducted will apply to the intellectual property as well as any financial benefits resulting from the research conducted under the terms and conditions of this scholarship. All the publications must acknowledge the support of the European Urological Scholarship Programme.
